ABC Head Start Society asked Lindisfarne Productions to create a promotional video that would highlight the importance of providing multilingual programming to Edmontonians.
ABC Head Start Society is a registered charity providing family support and early learning programs free of cost to eligible families. They team includes teachers, social workers, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, and behaviour specialists. ABC Head Start has been providing important services to the Edmonton community for over 35 years.
Lindisfarne headed over to the ABC Head Start Society to hear from both educators and families who have benefited from ABC Head Start’s multitude of important programming and services.
We learned that approximately 23% of Edmonton’s population are first generation Canadians. And approximately 26% of Edmontonians speak a language other than english. For ABC Head Start, up to 75% of their children and families speak a first language other than english. Having programs that are conducted in a variety of languages allows Edmonton students and families better access to services while feeling more comfortable and welcome in their community.
ABC Head Start Society works in partnership with many government and community organizations and programs. In order to help facilitate their multilingual programming, ABC Head Start partnered with the Multilingual Families Lab from the University of Alberta. The important work was done through the lab’s “Stimulae” project. This valuable partnership also helped to facilitate the Multilingual Readers project. The Multilingual Readers project provides a convenient reader that helps translate print to audio and thus fosters language learning. Readers of all stages and backgrounds get the opportunity to learn through the story of Lars the Little Polar Bear!
