Strathcona Wilderness Centre

The Lindisfarne team took a trip out to Strathcona County to create a documentary-style video about the Strathcona Wilderness Centre. We love finding out more about fantastic local amenities, so we were happy to make the trip!

The Strathcona Wilderness Centre is located just east of Edmonton in the Beaver Hills Biosphere. A popular year-round destination, the Wilderness Centre features forested hiking and cross-country skiing trails, snowshoeing, picnic sites, camping, disc golf, and last, but not least, a stunning lodge for group events and retreats. The Wilderness centre is a fabulous destination for families and groups of all ages.

While there, we spoke with Doug Marvin, former Assistant Director of Recreation in Strathcona County. Doug played an integral part in the initial development of the Wilderness Centre. His lasting enthusiasm for the area and passion for protecting the land was unmistakable. Doug shared the natural history of the area, and how his team worked to develop the area for the community.

Additionally, we spoke with Centre Supervisor, Jean Funk, who shared the continued evolution of the Wilderness Centre. The team continues to develop and maintain programs and amenities for the future. Having worked at the centre for many years, Jean has witnessed the important function it provides for Strathcona County’s residents. Rather than traveling hours, the Wilderness Centre allows residence to appreciate nature close to home. Local amenities like the Wilderness Centre are an important part of our community.

If you find yourself in Strathcona County, why not check out this fabulous centre? Rent some cross-country skis. Bring your tent or book a bunkhouse and enjoy camping in the wilderness. Enjoy the outdoor fitness equipment. And embrace the opportunity to convene with wildlife such as moose, white-tailed deer, owls, showshoe hares, porcupines, and many bird species! What a great way to spend a day.
